VanLife Admin Dashboard

The VanLife app is a community-oriented application for all things vanlife, dedicated to providing resources to campers and travelers in the United States. I had the opportunity to intern at the VanLife app working alongside their software engineering team.

The ask of the internship was to create an internal admin dashboard that allows users to see real time metrics of the app. The admin dashboard used both frontend and backend methodologies.

My Role: UI Design and Frontend/Backend Development

Location: Remote

Brief: Create an analytics admin dashboard using mobile app’s database

Frontend/Backend Technologies

The admin dashboard itself was built using an Angular framework. After writing functions to extract the metrics from the Firestore database, we used the Ionic Framework to display these metrics onto the page. The styling of the page was achieved using CSS Variables as well as CSS Shadow Parts.

Design Meets Code

Interning at the VanLife app allowed me to deepen my understanding between design and web development. By designing the prototype and then translating those designs into frontend and backend code, I began to realize the different needs designers and developers have.

Design brings to the table visual thinking and intuitive UX whilst web development brings forth the reality of the design- the means of production and delivery. A simple design hand-off is not enough. Rather, a collaborative process of listening and adapting to each other’s needs will create the refinement needed to deliver a great product.

Ionic Presentation

Check out the presentation I gave on the Ionic Framework for LEARN Academy's Delta cohort. I review hybrid applications, CSS variables, and Shadow Parts.
